Slow Cooker Pea and Ham Soup

Tuesday 17 January 2012
I love this soup, it's really cheap to make and a really tasty Winter warmer when the weather outside is really cold.  It's great for lunches or dinner and so easy to prepare in the slow cooker.

1 large ham or bacon hock

1 large onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, chopped

3 carrots, diced

2 sticks celery, diced

3 bay leaves

500g yellow or green split peas

1.5 litres water

freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Put all the ingredients into the slow cooker, add the water last.  Put the lid on and cook on high for 4-5 hours or on low for 8-10 hours, until the peas are very soft and the ham falls off the bone. Take the ham bone out of the slow cooker.  Take any remaining meat and fat and fat off the bone. Throw away that fat, roughly chop the ham and put it back in to the soup.

Season to taste and serve with crusty bread.

  1. That looks heavenly, I've not been making enough use of my slow cooker this winter, time to change that I think!

  3. It is so easy & tastes fab. Just the thing to come home to on these cold nights. Comforting and warm :o) Needs a decent grind of pepper for seasoning though, I find.

  7. Might work, I normally make sticky BBQ ribs out of ribs but you could give it a whirl in a soup :o)

  8. I lightly fried my onions and garlic first in two tablespoons of olive oil with a tea spoon of dried mint herb. Once soft I added to the slow cooker and followed the rest of your recipe adding two veg stock cubes. Devine. It needed around ten hours. Served with homemade bread rolls. Delicious.

  9. Silly question but do you need to our soak your supply press? And did you have the ham hock in water overnight?

    1. Hi Kathrin, I didn't soak the ham or split peas overnight. You can soak them if you like if the ham hock is particularly salty and you want the split peas to cook quicker. :)

    1. No, it doesn't. Put an uncooked ham hock into the slow cooker with all the other ingredients and cook as directed :)
