Chocolate Cake for less than £1

Choclette from Chocolate Log Blog has set an interesting challenge for We Should Cocoa this month, bake a chocolate cake for less than £1 - excluding energy/cooking costs. I managed to whip up this cake for 98p. If you wanted to add a decadent touch you could melt 100g of chocolate and spread it over the top of the cake.

Chocolate Cake for less than £1

150g plain flour - 7p
1/2 tsp baking powder - 1p
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda - 2p
50g cocoa powder - 45p
160g sugar - 13p
125ml vegetable oil - 16p
60ml strong coffee - 2p
60ml milk - 3p
60ml plain yoghurt - 4p
1tsp vanilla extract - 5p
100g chocolate (optional) - 30p

Preheat your oven to 170 C/150C Fan. Grease and line a 20cm/8 inch square cake tin.

Mix together the flour, baking powder, cocoa and sugar in a large bowl In a separate bowl or jug thoroughly mix together the oil, coffee, milk, yoghurt and vanilla. Combine the wet and dry ingredients, folding together gently until combined. Do not beat the mixture.

Pour the cake mix into your prepared cake tin. Bake for 30 - 35 minutes or until a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Cool the cake in the tin for 10 - 15 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Melt 100g of chocolate using your preferred method then spread over the cooled cake and leave to set.

I am also submitting this cake to Credit Crunch Munch created by Helen and Camilla which is being hosted by Gingey Bites this month.

The theme for May's Family Food Challenge, hosted alternately by Bangers and Mash and Eat Your Veg, is Cheap and Cheerful and this cake fits that perfectly. Bangers and Mash is hosting this month.

  6. Oh well done Michelle. I like your use of yogurt. I didn't give that a thought as I assumed it would be outside budget. The addition of coffee is a great touch for added richness. What I'm really liking about the recipes I've seen so far is that flavour doesn't have to go out of the window even on a tight budget. Thanks for playing along with We Should Cocoa :)
