Easter Story Cookies - with Bible references

I don’t know where this recipe originally came from as we've been making them for many years and I was given the recipe by a friend at Church in Oxford when my eldest was a toddler.  Thank you to whoever created the recipe originally, I hope you don't mind me blogging about it.

What's fab about this recipe is that it's both gluten free and dairy free.  However it does use nuts so they're obviously not suitable for nut allergy sufferers.

Start the night before Easter, which is Easter Saturday.

Preheat your oven to 150°C.

1 cup of walnut halves, almonds or hazelnuts
1 tsp vinegar
3 egg whites
Pinch of salt
1 cup caster sugar

You'll need a copy of the Bible – preferably a child friendly version

Put the nuts in a press'n'seal bag, remove as much air as you can.  Get the children to whack the bag with either a rolling pin or wooden spoons to break the nuts into pieces.  Explain that after Jesus’ arrest, the Roman soldiers beat him. Read John 19:1-3.

Let each child smell the vinegar.  Put 1 tsp into the bowl. Explain that when Jesus was thirsty he was given vinegar to drink. Read John 19:28-30

Add the egg whites. Eggs represent life. Jesus gave his life to give us life. Read John 10:10-11.

Put a grain or two of salt into each child’s hand. Let them taste it. Put a pinch of salt into the bowl of vinegar and egg whites.  Explain that the salt represents the tears that Jesus’ followers shed for him, and also the bitterness of our sins.  Read Luke 23:27.

The mixture looks decidedly unappetising.  As you add the sugar explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us and wants us to know him and we belong to him.  Read Psalms 34:8, John 3:1-6.

Beat the mixture with and electric mixer on high speed for 12-15 minutes until it forms stiff peaks.  Explain that white represents the purity in God’s eyes of those who have been cleansed by Jesus’ death. Read John 3:1-3.

Fold in the broken up nuts.  Drop teaspoonfuls onto a non-stick baking paper covered baking tray.  Explain that each mound looks like the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid. Read Matthew 27: 57-60.

Put the baking tray in the oven.  Gently close the door and turn the oven off.  Explain that the tomb was sealed. Matthew 27:65-66

Now go off to bed, or tuck the kids up in bed and relax for a bit.  Explain that while your children are sad to leave the cookies, Jesus’ followers were devastated when the tomb was sealed.

On Easter morning open the oven and eat a cookie.  You'll notice the cookies are hollow and empty inside just like the tomb was empty on that first Easter morning. Read Matthew 28:1-9.
