Quick and Easy Turkey Meatballs

I've been challenged by the lovelies at Lean On Turkey to create a pizza or pasta dish using turkey.  I decided to make Turkey Meatballs as they are a quick, filling and thrifty family dinner.  It makes a nice change from using  beef mince and makes the meatballs lower in fat too.  You can prepare the meatballs in advance if you need/want to and either freeze them or keep them in the fridge, suitably contained, for a couple of days.  My family, and a last minute guest, devoured the meal and announced las it was delicious.  Our guest wanted the recipe so that their Mum could make them, high praise indeed!

Quick and Easy Turkey Meatballs

85g wholemeal breadcrumbs
75ml milk, I used semi-skimmed
450g turkey mince
1 glove garlic, crushed
1 Tblsp fresh oregano or 1 tsp dried oregano
700ml chunky passata
500g pack of pasta, we used tricolour fusilli

Preheat your oven to 180C/160C Fan.

Put the breadcrumbs and milk into a large bowl, stir so the breadcrumbs absorb the milk.  Add the turkey mince, oregano, salt and pepper.  Mix together until completely combined then form into meatballs.  I find having my hands slightly wet helps the shaping process and the meatball mixture doesn't stick to my hands quite so much.  I made 20 meatballs from this mixture.

Put the meatballs into a large ovenproof dish.  Cook in the oven for 15 minutes, pour over the passata then cook for a further 10 minutes.  Whilst the meatballs are in the oven cook your pasta according to directions on the packet.  Prepare and cook any vegetables you would like to accompany the meatballs and pasta.  Serve the meatballs over the pasta with vegetables on the side.  This recipe fed 6 generously.

  1. We love turkey meatballs! They are just so quick and easy to make. Have you ever tried making them without the tomato sauce? Greek style? I'll blog the recipe but basically you create a bed of potato wedges in an oven proof dish, drizzle over lemon juice, glug of water, olive oil, oregano, salt and pepper, then perch the meatballs on top. Into oven for approx 1 hour until potato wedges are done! Absolutely delicious! (If you love lemons that is!)x
